The Army takes the challenge of imminent food shortage

The Army has launched a harvesting program to ensure that there will be no starvation in the future due to the present crisis. Using army soldiers, the first stage of the project was launched today by harvesting 5 acres of fallow paddy fields in Dambulu Halmilawa area of Palagala Regional Secretariat of Anuradhapura district.

0The paddy lands which had been left uncultivated in this yala season are used in the pilot project which is carried out under the guidance of Brigadier Abeysinghe, the Commanding Officer of the Mechanized Infantry Regiment.

The project was launched today with the participation of Major General Channa Weerasuriya, Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and Major Balasuriya, Commander of the Mechanized Infantry Regiment, along with a number of army soldiers and a group of farmers including officials of the Dambuluhalmilawa Farmers' Organization.
