Why Does Parliament Know Less Than TV Commentators About The Debt of Sri Lanka..?

2026-06-13 1234

A member of a parliamentary committee challenged the Governor over inconsistencies in national debt figures, arguing that some external commentators appear to have access to more accurate and up-to-date fiscal and cash buffer information than Parliament itself. In response, the Governor said the data is compiled from several institutions, including the Ministry of Finance. He also noted that the Central Bank releases detailed weekly economic indicators every Friday, which are closely monitored by market analysts.

The committee also expressed concern about illegal tourism operators that allegedly use unregistered payment gateways to avoid paying local taxes. The Governor acknowledged that such activities breach visa and licensing regulations and said authorities have previously worked with the police to investigate these operations.
