We remember that Harini Amarasooriya, who is the current Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and also the Minister of Education, took to the streets with the University Teachers' Union Federation and the Inter-University Students' Federation and launched a major protest campaign demanding that 6% of the GDP be allocated for education. However, Harini, who holds the position of Prime Minister and Minister of Education in the current government, allocated only 1.86% of the budget for education this time. This is an increase of about 0.12% compared to the 1.76% allocated for education in 2024.
Also, when the demonstrations were held demanding 6% allocation for education, Najith Indika, who was the convener of the Antaray, is a member of parliament in this government, and Mahinda Jayasinghe, who took to the streets with the teachers' unions demanding 6%, is a deputy minister in this government. All three voted on Friday (25) in favor of the budget that allocated 0.99% for education.
From May 14, 1965 to September 21 last year, it has become very clear to the country that the things that students took to the streets and the trade unions took to the streets from May 14, 1965 to September 21 last year, are things that cannot be done even if the fourth treasure is revealed.
The 159 people who came to parliament demanding power as "true people who are not bitter" are now proving it. The question to ask Harini, who became the Prime Minister and Minister of Education, is what you said wrong then? Is what you say right now right? Or is what you say wrong now? Is what you said right then right? What? The people of this country have made many sacrifices for 59 years, destroying their lives, property, money, education, profession and time by listening to what you said.
You, the tax payers of this country, paid the salaries and allowances of the police who were called to control the protests on the streets of Harinila demanding the government to allocate 6% for education. Your tax payers of this country spent your money to transport the injured during Harinila's protests to give them medicine. How many man-hours were lost due to the protests in the extremely crowded Colombo Fort? Why did Harinila, who incited people to say things that cannot be done even after a decade, block the Colombo-Kandy road and walk for 6 days? While the Harila-led JVP government is being blamed for 76 years, it is now better to speak with your conscience about what you have done in 59 of those years.
All we have to ask Harini, Mahinda and Najith is, are you raising your hands to these budgets while dragging your feet?
