Why Ranil..? Sri Lanka’s Next Political Move and the Battle for Economic Credibility
Can Ranil Wickremesinghe Make a Political Comeback..? Sri Lanka Awaits His Next Move
Beyond Crisis Management - Can Ranil Offer Sri Lanka a New Economic Vision..?

(Sujith Mangala De Silva)
One of the most significant questions emerging in Sri Lanka’s current political discourse is what political move Ranil Wickremesinghe will make next. Field observations may suggest that curiosity about his future role exists not only among political activists but also in conversations with ordinary citizens.

Of particular interest is the belief held by certain sections of society that Ranil Wickremesinghe can still play a distinctive role in helping Sri Lanka recover from its economic crisis. However, determining whether this view represents the opinion of the population as a whole would require reliable public opinion surveys and comprehensive data. It is therefore more accurate to regard this as a political trend worthy of examination rather than as a definitive conclusion about public opinion.
The Value of Political Leadership After a Crisis
The impact of the 2022 economic crisis on Sri Lanka’s political system has not yet fully subsided. The crisis exposed not only weaknesses in economic management but also raised questions about public confidence in political leadership.
Ranil Wickremesinghe, who served first as Prime Minister and subsequently as President, played a leading role in efforts to restore fiscal stability, implement a programme with the International Monetary Fund, and advance the debt restructuring process.
Although it can be acknowledged that these efforts helped achieve a degree of progress towards economic stabilisation, debate over their social costs continues. People’s experiences differ in relation to taxation, the cost of living, electricity and fuel prices, employment opportunities, and the actual income levels of households.
Accordingly, neither completely dismissing Wickremesinghe’s contribution nor claiming that he alone possesses the solutions to every economic problem is sufficient when assessing his economic role.
The Gap Between Economic Stability and People’s Living Standards
Sri Lanka’s future economic trajectory will not be determined solely by indicators such as foreign reserves, inflation, or fiscal targets. It is equally important to consider the extent to which economic progress translates into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary households.
In May 2026, the International Monetary Fund completed the fifth and sixth reviews of Sri Lanka’s programme. Nevertheless, assessments by the institution indicate that challenges relating to debt sustainability, structural reforms, and external economic risks remain.
The fundamental question arising from this situation is how the country can move forward after achieving a degree of economic stabilisation. People want more than simply avoiding a recurrence of the crisis. They seek greater employment opportunities, fair incomes, business opportunities, investment, more efficient public services, and confidence in the future. Therefore, experience in managing an economic crisis acquires political value only if it can be translated into future economic growth and tangible benefits for the people.
Why Is Ranil Wickremesinghe’s Next Move So Crucial..?
Curiosity about Ranil Wickremesinghe’s future political activities should not be examined merely as a question about the political future of an individual. It is also connected to opposition politics in Sri Lanka, alternatives in economic policy, and public expectations of political leadership.
If he chooses to resume an active political role, he will need a clear policy objective. Experience in managing an economic crisis alone will not be sufficient to sustain a future political journey.
What economic vision can he offer..? How can he create a credible environment for businesses and investment? How can low-income communities be protected while maintaining fiscal discipline..? How can employment and future opportunities be created for the younger generation? What approach will he adopt to address corruption, the efficiency of state institutions, and public confidence in governance..? Without clear answers to these questions, building future political support solely on the basis of past experience will be difficult.
The Challenge Facing the Current Government
The debate surrounding Ranil Wickremesinghe’s future cannot be separated from the performance of the current government. To retain its political mandate, a government must translate its electoral promises and policies into meaningful changes in people’s daily lives.
Even if numerical indicators of economic growth appear favourable, political confidence may weaken if people cannot afford the cost of living or if employment and income opportunities remain inadequate. Opposition political parties also have a responsibility to go beyond criticising the government and present credible economic alternatives. The question of who possesses the solutions to the country’s economic crisis must be determined not merely by political campaigning or personal image, but by the quality of policies and the capacity to implement them.
The Final Decision Rests with the People
It is not possible at this moment to state with certainty whether Ranil Wickremesinghe will once again emerge as a major figure exercising political influence in Sri Lanka. His decisions, the strength of his political organisation, the policies he presents, and the public response will be decisive factors.
Nevertheless, if his name once again becomes associated with discussions about economic solutions, that is a political signal worthy of examination. Whether that signal reflects genuine public support, expectations built on past experience, or dissatisfaction with the current government remains a question requiring further investigation.
What Sri Lanka needs today is not the placement of all its hopes in a single individual, but leadership and a policy vision capable of building a sustainable economy and governance system. Therefore, a more important question than what Ranil Wickremesinghe is doing now is this: What new answer can he offer for Sri Lanka’s future economic journey..?
The answer will be determined not only by his past, but also by his future actions and the judgement the people ultimately make of them.
