Former Finance Minister and United National Party Colombo District leader, Ravi Karunanayake, has emphasized that the current public service has become a big challenge for the country's future.
Ravi Karunanayake while pointing out that out of every hundred rupees that Sri Lanka earns, forty-four rupees (44 +) or more is spent on public service, says that not only the representatives of the people but also the public service should be equally responsible for the current crises.
Ravi Karunanayake also says that focusing only on the representatives of the people including the Parliamentarians will not provide sustainable solutions to the current crisis facing the country.
Ravi Karunanayake, who points out that the Sri Lankan public service is a large network of human and physical resources consisting of 1,104,219 people (according to 2018 statistics), stressed that attention should be paid especially on the motivation and productivity of nearly fifteen lakh government employees (including the armed forces).
Thus, he claims that all government institutions that have become a burden to the nation should be privatized or restructured, and indeed the effectiveness of the Sri Lankan public sector is weak and neutral.
Ravi Karunanayake said that the public service should be innovated for the future of the Sri Lankan nation, especially for the common majority, and we should not forget that the Sri Lankan nation has fallen in to the present state due to being caught in the traps of opportunistic politicians and various religious leaders who present false ideas against innovation.
