2,400,000 million loss due to Gotas ban on chemical fertilizers

It has been revealed that due to the ban on chemical fertilizers, a loss of over rupees 2,450,000 million has been incurred due to decrees in the production of paddy and tea in 2022.

These facts have come to light in a special study conducted by Professor Wasantha Athukorala of Peradeniya University's Department of Economics in this regard, and every farmer has suffered an average loss of one lakh rupees in the year 2022 due to this.

Professor Wasantha Athukorala pointed out that the rice production in the “ Maha season” of 2022 has decreased by eleven hundred thirty thousand one hundred and sixty four metric tons (36%) compared to the previous year's “ Maha  season” and the rice production in the “ Yala season” has decreased by six hundred and twenty six thousand five hundred and twenty seven metric tons (30%).

According to Professor Wasantha Athukorala, it has been revealed that the production in those two seasons is seventeen hundred fifty six thousand six hundred and ninety one metric tons. Meanwhile, the Professor who said that due to the ban on chemical fertilizers, the tea production in the year 2022 has decreased by more than 47,000 metric tons also stated that it has been calculated as 608,400 million.

Meanwhile, Professor Wasantha Athukorala who highlighted that in 2022, the export of rubber has decreased by 1.8%, the export of coconut by 5.9%, the export of spices by 18.9%, and the export of vegetables by 6.6% further pointed out a colossal amount of foreign revenue was deprived to the country. This study further revealed that rupees 848,000 million had been spent by the government to import organic fertilizers from April to December 2022.
