Karu intervenes to end the elephant-human conflict

2022-11-02 40602

Sri Lanka has become the country with the highest "elephant-human" conflict in the world as a result of people becoming victims of the wild elephant menace, which has been a problem for over 60 years.

As a solution to that, a community-based electric fence was established as a model "elephant fence" in the Habarana in a radius of 4.4 kilometers in Bandiwewa village near Ritigala and the ownership was given to the people as an initiative under the patronage of Chairman of the National Movement for a Just Society, Deshabandu Karu Jayasuriya.

This program, which was initiated in January 2022, as a joint project of the Conservation Research Institute, Cinnamon Hotel Group and TUI Foundation and the coordination of those institutions was done by Chairman of the National Movement for a Just Society, Karu Jayasuriya,

The resources sponsorship was given by Dr. Prutuviraj Fernando and Dr. Sumit Pilapitiya, who have been researching this problem for over 30 years.
