The former presidents overseas expenses are not funded by the government

The Government Information Department, issuing a statement confirmed that former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s expenses met abroad are not borne by the government. The statement states that all the expenses are borne by the personal money of the former President.

At the press conference held tuesday (16) to announce the cabinet decisions, a Journalist raised a question about the former President's overseas expenses. Answering the question, Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena stated that former and current Presidents are legally entitled to certain privileges.

But this statement was reported by some media as suggesting that the government is spending money for the foreign expenses of the former President, says the Government Information Department.

The statement issued by the Government Information further stated that former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has informed that the reports published by some media about his overseas expenses are incorrect and he has also emphasized that all the expenses are being met from his personal money.
