Migrants’ remittances have dropped to $ 248 million

 

Foreign remittances fell by 56% in the first four months

 

It has been revealed that according to the data of the Department of Census and Statistics, the average monthly household expenditure in April increased by Rs. 5672 compared to March 2022.

While expenditure on food increased by Rs. 3345, the expenditure on rice increased by Rs. 989 in April compared to March 2022.

The data from the Department of Census and Statistics points out that the cost per family unit for milk powder increased by 369 rupees and the non-food category increased by 2327 rupees.

The monthly transport cost per family under the non-food category increased by 932 in April 2022 compared to March 2022, according to data from the Department of Census and Statistics.

Meanwhile, according to the latest data from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, remittances from Sri Lankans working abroad fell to US $ 248 million in April 2022 and compared to 2021 it is a drop of 52%.

The reports from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka show that foreign remittances have dropped down by 56% and Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe stated that a number of measures are in action to solve the economic crisis.  

Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe pointing out that discussions being held for an IMF loan is prominent among these measures stated that if the measures are completed within the next six months, the Sri Lankan economy can be expected to stabilize in the coming year.
