Sri Lankan-born Cassandra Fernando got elected to Australia's 47th Parliament from Holt seat winning the federal election held on Saturday ( 21) representing the Labour Party.
Born in Sri Lanka in 1988, Ms. Fernando moved to Australia in 1999. She is the first Sri Lankan-born woman to represent the Australian Parliament.
Competing with her another Sri Lankan born male candidate, Ranj Perera lost the seat with the victory of Cassandra Fernando. Ms. Fernando is a Pastry Chef by profession and has been teaching English for migrants free of charge who do not speak English.
