Another conflict of opinion has arisen in the midst of the well-known geopolitical rivalry between the US and China to gain more influence in the strategically important Indian Ocean region.
This situation has arisen following a report, released by the US Department of Defense on the Chinese People's Liberation Army and the defense development activities.
The US Department of Defense while furnishing its 2021 annual report to the United States Congress, has revealed that several countries, including Sri Lanka, are likely to become centers of providing facilities for the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
The U.S. Department of Defense has prepared this report on China's military and defense development activities which further states that China may establish military facilities centers in 13 countries around the world, including Sri Lanka, with the aim of maintaining its military presence over a large geographical area.
This report, issued by the U.S. Department of Defense further mentioned that China is likely to use 13 countries including Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan along with Sri Lanka for this purpose and China is expecting to enhance its naval, air and ground military.
