President of the National Movement for a Just Society, Deshabandu Karu Jayasuriya expressed his views issuing a press release on the occasion of World Teachers' Day in which he further stated.
The National Movement for a Just Society, along with the entire nation extend our honorable salutation to the teaching community while drawing the attention of the entire nation towards the dignity of the teaching community as well as our responsibilities to the future generations in the country. When considering the tremendous social transformation that has taken place in Sri Lanka since the introduction of the free education system, the contribution of education professionals is immense. In this context, the teacher is treated ahead of many other professionals.
That teacher's pride always symbolizes the vitality of a proud future generation. That is the aspiration of the whole nation. Therefore, as a country, we must always be concerned about the professional dignity of the Sri Lankan teaching profession and must not give up the priority we place on education under any circumstances. That is why we as a nation need to pay close attention to some of the grievances that have arisen from the teaching community today and take appropriate fair action.
At the same time, today we are entering a period in which the entire society must pay close attention to the future of the entire student body of the country. We should not keep any room for obstruction of children's education and childhood under any circumstances. It is the responsibility of the whole nation. We believe that the responsibility of the society towards the teaching community and the responsibility of the teaching community towards the society should be of utmost responsibility.
Accordingly, we strongly request from the authorities of this country to pay sensitively close attention to the demands, made by the teaching community in Sri Lanka and to act in a manner to safeguard the dignity and progress of the entire teaching community. We who respect the great service rendered by teachers in maintaining and nurturing the vitality of education in this country also request from the entire teaching community to continue to focus on their noble role in the name of the children of this country, without relinquishing their enormous responsibilities under any circumstances.
