Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, Anura Kumara Dissanayake says that it is the responsibility of the rulers who come to power to protect the strategically important economic hubs and economic resources of any country and what a tragedy it is, if the resources which the country had by the time of our birth are sold to foreigners by the time of our demise.
Leader of the JVP, Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed his views at a media briefing, held at the JVP Head Office in Battaramulla on Monday (04) where he further stated.
It is clear that China, India and the United States are making a huge economic and political intervention in our country. The country has been in such a precarious position because of its long-standing economic and foreign policy. The end result has been the rapid sale of our country's national resources, surpassing each other.
Energy resources are strategically important in any country. Also the port becomes important. The rulers are in the process of transferring all the resources belonging to the descendants of this country to foreign Companies within a period of nearly one and a half months.
The key transaction of this process is the selling of 40% of the ownership of Kerawalapitiya Power Plant and gas supply as well as the storage terminal to the United States. A number of relevant agreements related to this transaction were signed even without the knowledge of the Cabinet.
An important economic hub was thus sold to a foreign country. After this the western terminal of the Colombo port was sold to Adhani, an Indian Company. Accordingly, services which were provided by the Port Authority were sold.
In 2017, the Ports Authority earned over Rs. 5 billion from the provision of services. The Relevant measures are being made to transfer this revenue to a Chinese Company. The Cabinet has approved to sell a 13 acre land near the Port City for a lease of paltry Rs. 800,000 per acre. Thus, the country has lost a very important part of our economic strategy.
A proposal to repeal the Petroleum Resources Mining Authority Act of 2003 which is related to oil exploration in our country. There is a move to repeal the existing Act regarding oil drilling, production and all related investigations on 6th of this month. .
Through this a process of re-colonizing our country has been launched. Family rule that dreams of living in the United States is turning our country back into a colony of foreign powers.
They are engaged in this destructive journey under the guise of patriotism and great affection to the country. We urge the trade unions of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, the Ports Authority and the Ceylon Electricity Board to work together to prevent this catastrophe in their respective fields.
As a political movement, we are ready to intervene with this. We call on all citizens to join with us to defeat this disastrous economic journey. We must defeat the attempt to further trade important strategic hubs of our country to foreign powers.
