The earthquake of a magnitude of 6.0 happened about 09:15 local time today. Even though it damaged a few buildings in the city, so far no injuries have been reported.
The earthquake has also had an impact in neighboring South Australia and New South Wales.
"If you are located in Victoria, you are in danger. Expect aftershocks, stay away from damaged buildings and other hazards. Avoid driving, except for emergencies," Victoria's State Emergency Service had alarmed the residents.
The authorities have taken immediate measures to evacuate people from high-rise buildings and a city hospital. City tram lines had also been suspended as a result of the damage.
