Former Speaker Deshabandu Karu Jayasuriya stressed that he strongly condemn the absurd, untrue, baseless and heinous allegations continually leveled by Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando in Parliament that the arrests of Members of Parliament during his tenure as Speaker were in the interest of good governance government.
Deshabandu Karu Jayasuriya has emphasized this issue in a special letter to the current Speaker of Parliament, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena which further stated
Hon. Johnston Fernando has been repeatedly accusing since the inauguration of the new Parliament, that the Members of Parliament were arrested during my tenure as the Speaker on the requirements of the government.
I have decided to present the truth to your kind attention since I do not have the opportunity to answer for these allegations which are completely unjust and fabricated and I strongly believe that I performed my duty in accordance with conscience.
From the first day of taking the Speaker's chair in 2015 until the appointment of a new Speaker, I have never allowed any Member of Parliament to be unjustly arrested. In one incident where Police entered Hon. Minister Champika Ranawaka’s residence without such notice and tried to arrest him, I made arrangements to suspend the arrest until the legal procedure is completed.
When the Chief Government Whip of the current Parliament of the Government of Sri Lanka hammered me with chairs, I forgot those incidents with a kind heart.
I personally resolved the problems faced by Hon. Minister Johnston Fernando while he was in remand custody. I bring these issues to your kind attention to show that assassination of character is a very low and despicable act in politics.
