“Vajira Abeywardena lost the 2010 general election. At that time he sent a message to Ranil Wickremesinghe asking him to take him to Parliament from the national list. Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe rejected this request, reasoning out that there was no tradition in the United National Party to send losers to parliament from the national list” a senior leader of the party told lankanewsweek.
Reminding this past incident related to the arrival of Ranil Wickremesinghe in parliament, the senior leader of the UNP further stated.
Vajira Abeywardena lost the 2010 general election. At that time he sent a message to Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe asking him to take him to Parliament from the national list. He had sent the message through a group of close associates of Ranil Wickremesinghe including Journalists who worked for 'Lankadeepa' and 'Divaina' Newspapers.
In his message, Vajira Abeywardena pledged to Ranil Wickremesinghe that if he was elected to Parliament from the National List, he would get thousands of Buddhist monks to Colombo and declare to the whole country that the political decision, taken by Ranil Wickremesinghe is correct for which the blessings of Maha Sangha will be bestowed. Vajira Abeywardena further stated strongly in his message that there would be no problem, pressure or issue on Ranil Wickremesinghe from the UNP and the party members and that he would pledge to protect Ranil Wickremesinghe's leadership.
However, Ranil Wickremesinghe told those who brought Vajira Abeywardena's message that the UNP does not have a tradition of sending losers who have been rejected by the people to parliament from the national list. Although Ranil Wickremesinghe rejected Vajira Abeywardena's request, he did not remove Vajira Abeywardena, who was not a Member of Parliament at the time, from the post of Chairman of the UNP of Galle District.
Ranil Wickremesinghe did not even heed the request of the people of the Galle District to remove Mr. Vajira Abeywardena, who is not a Member of Parliament and rejected by the people, from the post of Chairman of the United National Party of the Galle District and to appoint MP Gayantha Karunatilake to the post.
If anyone who was not a member of parliament, was bearing the position of the Chairman of a District Organizing Committee, it would have been only Vajira Abeywardena. Except Vajira Abeywardena in the Galle District, all other Chairmen of the District UNP Organization were Members of Parliament.
Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe’s arrival in the parliament from the national list by breaching the tradition of the party of not giving the opportunity for anyone who was rejected by people is a shame which make the people of the country to lough.
Although Ranil Wickremasinghe refused to appoint him to parliament from the national list at that time, Vajira Abeywardena instigated Ranil Wickremesinghe to appoint him to parliament from the national list, helped Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe secure his party leadership is to get the party leadership after him tactically winning his heart.
