A positive response for the special request made by President of the National Movement for a Just Society Deshabandu Karu Jayasuriya, from three European countries to donate the surplus of COVID-19 vaccines, available in their countries to the people of Sri Lanka, has received positive response.
President of the National Movement for a Just Society, Deshabandu Karu Jayasuriya had made the request for the safety of the country and its people from Switzerland, France and Germany and a large quantity of the vaccine COVID-19 will be received by Sri Lanka in the near few weeks.
The countries that responded immediately to Mr. Karu Jayasuriya's request have already assured that the relevant stock of vaccines will be delivered to Sri Lanka as soon as possible and the United Nations will coordinate all arrangements for the donation of the vaccines to Sri Lanka as a COVAX gift.
According to reports currently being received by "lankanewsweek" Germany alone will donate around 600,000 vaccines and even though the number of vaccines to be donated by Switzerland and France has not been announced in figures yet, it is expected to be significantly larger.
Mr. Jayasuriya had also taken steps to hold lengthy discussions with the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations regarding the dangerous situation in Sri Lanka and the precarious situation faced by the people, during which he requested from the relevant countries and the United Nations some quantity from the surplus of COVID-19 vaccines, currently available in Switzerland, Germany and France to be made available for the benefit of the people of Sri Lanka.
