Former Prime minister and the leader of the United National Party, Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe emphasized that the war against the deadly COVID 19 should not be used to protect the government or a narrow political war, but only a battle to rescue the lives of people.
He further stated that the President and the Ministers should act immediately to take over the powers to rescue people of this country from the COVID 19 pandemic.
The Leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe who made these remarks while addressing the media in Colombo on the dangers of the COVID-19 epidemic that is spreading across the country also revealed.
As a country we are facing an acute outbreak of COVID-19. The health condition of the people is gradually declining. The COVID-19 disaster is currently spreading throughout Sri Lanka. There is a shortage of vaccines as well as a lack of oxygen. There is a shortage of VENTILATORS. There is a shortage of beds in hospitals. Hospitals are fully occupied.
The COVID-19 epidemic is increasing day by day. Accordingly, we as a country are at a critical juncture. If we do not make further decisions according to medical and health advices, we will get into trouble.
According to the latest report, released by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington in the United States, there is a possibility that our country will reach the peak of rapid patient growth. Also, more than 100 deaths per day are likely to occur by June-July 2021. Hence we all need to work together at this crucial juncture.
This is not a fight to protect the name of the government. Also, this war is not a political battle. In fact, I should mention that this war is a battle to save the lives of the people. We are not asking for a change of the government. According to the Constitution of this country, the responsibility of the country lies with the Cabinet.
The President and the Ministers must act to acquire full powers to the Cabinet to protect our people from this pandemic. Committees, appointed to control the COVID-19 epidemic have failed. Even though the seriousness of this pandemic was highlighted in advance, no action had been taken. People have lost faith.
As the United National Party, we state that these powers should be given to the Cabinet. The President and the Cabinet should acquire these powers immediately. They have to talk to the political leaders of the opposition in Parliament this week. The opposition parties too should extend their support. We should act quickly. If we do not take action now, we will lose a lot of lives. If there is sympathy towards the people of the country, the Cabinet should take this responsibility. There are experienced people. I make a special request to act accordingly.
