These are the questions, asked by UNPers after listening to the stories of Cardinal Malcom Ranjith. Supporters of Mahinda think that Cardinal will snatch the Catholic votes and put to the lap of Mahinda as whole. His speeches indicate that he is paving the way for the candidate of Mahinda to obtain the votes of Catholics. His comments such as “Leaders do not have a back born” , “the government and it’s leaders should go home” show that he is indirectly attempting to bring Mahinda back to the power. Because if the leaders and the government withdraws, it is Mahinda who will definitely comes to power. After making all these comments, what Cardinal says is that he is making all these comments to allay the pain, caused by the Easter attack.

The employees of the Free Trade Zone of Seeduwa, Negombo launched a massive Protest against a Pension Scheme for Private Sector employees, to be brought by Mahinda Regime in 2011 even before the Easter attack. Mahinda regime gunshot these employees. Roshen Chanaka was killed by this shooting. He was a Catholic youth. Not only the Catholics of that area but also the Priests of these Parishes also got organized against this deadly act. It was decided to take the Coffin of the deceased to the cemetery from the Church in a parade where Priests too were supposed to participate. But the Priest of the Church where the funeral was arranged, got a message on the previous day of the funeral. It instructed the Priest to do the funeral without the participation of mass in a secrete manner. Trade Unions alleged that it was Cardinal who threats the Priests. The UNP which was in opposition too alleged that Cardinal did it on the instructions of Rajapaksha regime.

Roshan Chanaka’s assassination vanished. His mother went before Human Rights Commission to punish those who are responsible and bring about justice in 2018. She questioned as to what happened to the Report of the Committee, appointed by Mahinda himself to inquire about this incident and still those who were responsible to this murder were free.

It is a question as to why the Cardinal was silent when Chanaka’s mother was appealing for justice from 2011.

Not only Roshen Chanaka, Journalists too were killed during Mahinda regime. During the war a Priest of North also disappeared. It was the Church that encouraged Manorani Sarawanamuththu , mother of Richerd De Soysa who was killed during Premadasa regime to go before International Courts. It is not sure whether it was Cardinal’s fault or someone else for not having the back born do go against Mahinda, which the Church had during Premadasa regime to stand against these assassinations. It is a puzzle as to why Cardinal stands against Maithree- Ranil regime for the killings of Catholics by Terrorists and remained silent when Catholics were killed during Rajapaksha regime.

On the other hand, it was not after the Easter attack that Cardinal started battering Maithree – Ranil regime. When the war against Maithree- Ranil started at Sambodi Viharaya, owned by the Buddhist Chanel organized an all religion conference against the new Constitution , Cardinal participating there thrashed the government. He alleged that the government is fulfilling a requirement of America and other countries. Recently also Cardinal spoke against the Security Agreement, to be entered with America. But when Defense Secretary, Gotabaya Rajapksha signed a similar Agreement with America secretly during Pajapaksha regime, Cardinal turned a blind eye as if he had not seen it.

Since a relative daughter of Cardinal was appointed for a high rank at France Embassy by Mahinda regime, Cardinal does not see the faults of Mahinda government , stated Colombo Telegraph Web Site those days. This Web Site further revealed that this appointment was done against the procedure. We do not know whether it was true or not. But what Colombo Telegraph Web wanted to pass was that the Cardinal was getting down Pope to Sri Lanka to get the Catholic votes to Mahinda when he decided to go for a sudden election, as a help in turn. It was when Mahinda was counting fingers to go for a sudden election that Cardinal invited Pope to visit Sri Lanka in 2014. Mahinda personally invited Pope after visiting him with the mediation of Cardinal. But Catholic Bishops and the Priests raised the voice to postpone the visit of Pope during a rush of an election , after feeling Mahinda’s intention of grabbing the Catholic votes.

But Cardinal sent Defense Secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksha to meet Pope amid the objection of the Priests, to get the Pope to visit Sri Lanka during the Presidential election. But listening to the objection raised by Bishops and Priests, Pope postponed the visit. The allegation that Cardinal organized the visit of Pope for Mahinda to win the votes of Catholics in 2015 presidential election became a big topic for media. But Cardinal failed to get down Pope to Sri Lanka before the presidential election. He could not turn Catholic votes either. It was Maithreepala who won Catholic votes.

“Hence can Cardinal break the UNP votes at the next election? It is not an easy task. Catholics are in s terrible shock after the Easter attack. They knew very well that the government would have averted it. But UNP Catholics do not like passing the responsibility of the attack to the government. Catholics of pro-Mahinda want to pass the responsibility to the government. Now Catholics have been divided according affiliation of politics. Cardinal is not competent enough to change the mind of the Catholics who voted to UNP always. There is a common view among the UNP Catholics that Cardinal is favoring Mahinda.

Cardinal is not a Hero among them. It was the anti government Buddhist, among whom Cardinal became popular character after the Easter attack. When Cardinal is criticizing the government, pro –Mahinda media develop Cardinal’s image as a Hero. Hence Cardinal is the Hero of those who are anti –government. The other hand there is no need to find evidence to prove that Cardinal is pro-Mahinda. It was revealed by a cable message of Wikileaks of American Embassy. Sunday Leader paper of 24th September 2011 and Colombo Telegraph Web Site published the cable as this. It was revealed by a Wikileaks cable Message of American Embassy that Cardinal Malcom Rajith met Patrishia Britnish , the American Ambassador of Sri Lanka to sweep the war crime charges against Mahinda Rajapaksha under the carpet. Cardinal thinks that Mahinda is a good person.

Cardinal highlighted Mahinda as a person who fights for Human Rights even when he was in opposition. Cardinal stated that if the international does any harm to Mahinda it will lead to devastation in the country. Cardinal who told that weakening Mahinda will be a great opportunity to the international, thought that cancellation of GSP facility to Sri Lanka will lead to a military rebellion. This was a cable message sent by American Ambassador, Patrishia on Cardinal’s meeting with her. Later on Wikileaks exposed this message. She described Cardinal as an associate of Mahinda in her cover letter. “Then why Cardinal failed to grab the Catholic votes to Mahinda in 2015. It was those days that Catholics voted for the party decided by the Church. The Church faced the same crisis in 2005 presidential election that they face today.

In 2004 and 2005 there was campaign to attack Churches. It was due to the emergent of an extremist Moments in the after math of the death of Soma Thero. Archbishop Rev Oswal Gomaz was shocked. Not only the Archbishop but the whole country new that Moments, established to attack Churches are supporting Mahinda. Archbishop issued a message to Catholics to not support the candidates who get the support of the Moments that attack Churches.

Lalith Kothalawala who supported Ranil got this message published as an advertisement in every media through an Organization of him. UNP thought that they will get Catholic votes as a bulk. UNP won all the Catholic areas. Those were the areas UNP always won. Mahinda also could win a large number. It was because the Catholics who favor Mahinda, are voting for him even though the Moments that attacked Churches are supporting Mahinda. Whatever said and done by Cardinal, it is same thing that is going to happen in 2020. If Mahinda camp is expecting the Catholic votes as a whole , it will never happened.
