The leader of the National Movement for a Just Society, Karu Jayasuriya, issued a press release on Monday (10) and pointed out that the government should take steps to expedite the constitutional amendment process. He further pointed out the need to take this as a priority task, as promised to the people during the presidential election as well as the general election. The full press release is as follows.
We, the organization, firmly believe that embarking on a path of constitutional reform will be the most important and essential task for ushering in a new era for Sri Lanka. We hope that the National People's Power led by the Honorable President will pay due attention to it.
Our organization highly recognizes the need for commitment to national and religious unity, as emphasized by the President before the country on this Independence Day. We also hope that the said constitutional reform process should be a process that further strengthens the democracy of this country in accordance with the democratic principles accepted in the world.
Considering the responsible process of drafting a new constitution that suits the country, the National Movement for a Just Society, which recognizes that it is not a task that can be done immediately or in a hurry, has the potential to approach it by presenting a certain time frame as promised to the country during the last presidential election. If the process is delayed unnecessarily, it may also be detrimental to the reputation of the President. This should not be the case.
There is also an approach that we would like to point out regarding this process. That is, the attention paid to it by the 8th Parliament of Sri Lanka. It should be noted that the contribution made by Attorney-at-Law Lal Wijenayake, a friend of the current National People's Power, who chaired a committee appointed for the same purpose, was very honorable. It should also be recalled that in general, the process also earned the respect of many parties that represented the parliament at that time.
Considering the pledge made by the current government, which has come to power with the blessings of the overwhelming majority of the people, as well as the political group representing the main opposition in parliament and the overwhelming majority of other parties, before the people for a new constitution, we are confident that this government will receive the support of all parties in the country and the blessings of the entire people of the country.
We would like to state with great enthusiasm that our organization will continue to dedicate itself to the future with great enthusiasm, taking forward the commitment to a constitutional reform program that will benefit the country, which was the unifying aspiration that the National Movement for a Just Society was initiated by His Holiness Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero.
