Before Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who was in the opposition at that time, became president, he formed many alliances with the leaders of the anti-government opposition parties. After the JVP led by Anura rejoined active politics in 1994 under the leadership of Somawansa Amarasinghe, his party never fielded a presidential candidate for 25 years.

They contested the presidential election for the first time as a party after 1994 in 2019.

However, there is ample evidence that until 2024, they sometimes formed alliances with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party-led Betel Leaf and expressed support for the United National Party without an alliance. But today, the general unity of the opposition party leaders in Parliament has become an event that is indigestible for the Compass 159 representing the government, and for the activists outside.

According to them, this unity is a thief. But Anura Kumara, who worked with those thieves back then, has surprisingly forgotten the love they had for each other in the past.

Today, the opposition had come together to discuss how to protect their parliamentary rights, defeat the government's program that breaks the opposition's representation in committees, and take collective decisions to create a stronger parliament through it. This is an optimistic approach to a healthy parliament. Because even with 159, it is possible to explain how a government party that is entertaining children, even if it holds two-thirds power, can limit the government through such discussions.

It is an optimistic approach for many who spoke of a united opposition in the past that the opposition now appears to be united. No matter how much talk there is outside Parliament, it is now very clear that the government can only be defeated inside Parliament if all 66 members representing the opposition come together as one.
