New amendments for Shops and Office Employees Act No. 19 of 1954, the Factories Ordinance No. 45 of 1942 and the Employment of Women and Children Act No. 47 of 1956 will be tabled at Parliament today ( 5) for approval.
Labour Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva confirms that these amendments will be brought to comply the International Labor Organization's Convention on the Elimination of Child Labor.
He further stated that these Labour Ordinances will be amended to coincide with the age of compulsory education. After the amendment, the minimum age of employment will be raised from 14 to 16 years and no child under the age of 16 will be allowed to work in any trade.
