Two female Air force Officers have been commissioned as Pilots for the first time in the history of Sri Lanka. Issuing a statement, the Sri Lanka Air Force said Pilot Officer A.D.P.L. Gunarathe and Pilot Officer R.T. Weerawardana became the first Lady Officers to be awarded the prestigious Flying Brevet.
These Pilot Officers were commissioned yesterday (16) at the Air force academy under the patronage of Defense Secretary Major General Kamal Gunarathne and Air force Chief Air Marshal Sudharshana Pathirana.
Sri Lanka Air force was established when Lanka Royal Air force came into effect on 2nd March 1951 and the Lanka Royal Air force became Sri Lanka Air force in 1972.
